As you know, Việt Nam is located in the centre of the Southeast Asia. It lies in the Eastern part of the Indochina bordering to China to the North, Laos and Cambodia to the West and East sea and pacific ocean East and South. Based on archaeology and history, Vietnam that was formerly Âu Lạc was found by Lạc -Việt people who was the ancestor of Việt -Mường and Âu -Việt who was the ancestor of Tày -Nùng in the third century before Christ. The chieftain of the country at that time was Thục Phán who named himself An Dương Vương. Presently, there are 54 different ethnic groups inhabiting Việt Nam. They are Kinh, Mường, Thổ, Chứt, Tày, Nùng, Thái, Giáy, Lự, Sán Chay, Lào, Bố Y, Ba Na, Bru-Vân Kiều, Cờ-ho, Xinh Mun, Brâu, Chơ-ro, Giẻ Triêng, Mạ, Khme, Khơ Mú, M'nông, Xtiêng, Kháng, Mảng, Hrê, Tà-ôi, Co, Cơ-tu, Rơ Măm, Xơ Đăng, Ơ-Đu, HMông, Dao, Pà Thẻn, La Chí, Pu Péo, Cờ Lao, La Ha, Chăm, Êđê, Gia Rai, Chu Ru, Ra Glai, Hoa, Sán Dìu, Ngái, Hà Nhì, Lô Lô, Phù Lá, Cống, La Hủ, Si La.
Kinh people (or Việt) accounts for nearly 90 per cent of Việt Nam's total population. Kinh people almost lives in Deltas or main roads in all provinces of the country. Their traditional costume was very simple and modest. Men used to wear a long gown with slits on either side and a turban. The gown and turban usually in black or brown were made of silk or cotton. Women used to have a more attractive dress. They used to wear ao tu than with four slits divided equally on its lower section and áo dài, a long dress with slits on either side. Áo tứ thân (four-panel traditional dress) has three layers with different colors. It was made of silk. Formerly, almost women used to blacken their teeth which considered more beautiful. Men's and women's garments have gradually changed along with social development. However, traditional costume for men and women restores in traditional festivals and entertainment. In recent years, the Vietnamese traditional áo dài is loved by not only Vietnamese girls and women but also foreign ladies in the world.
